Procedure:

*Goal of Study: In this dichotic listening task, participants used my headphones to listen to a recording that played a series of different words into each ear. The words played to the left ear in any one trial would be similar in sound to the word played to the right ear. (Note: There was a total of 21 words in the recording being played into each ear, or 42 words into both ears. Participants were not allowed to replay the recording of the previous word presented. Half of the participants were listening to the recording with the right earbud in the right ear and the left earbud in the left ear. The other half did the opposite and placed the right earbud in the left ear and the left earbud in the right ear.) Participants in the control group listened to a recording that played identical words to both ears.

  1. The goal of this study was discussed prior to the start of the experiment.*

  2. The participant was handed a pair of headphones, where one earbud was marked with ‘L’ for left and the other one with ‘R’ for right, in order for the researcher to confirm that the correct earbud was being used.

  3. The participant was given a pencil and paper.

  4. The participant was instructed to write down the words that they heard from the recording. They were told to write either one of the words being played through the right or left earphones, or both if they were able to identify them.

  5. Once the recording began, there was a short pause after each one-syllable word was played to ensure that the participant had enough time to write down the words that they heard.
